I had the pleasure of watching the incredible movie “A Million Miles Away” and guess what? I actually crossed paths with none other than Jose Hernandez! Seriously, this film is absolutely mind-blowing as it goes through the journey of Jose, a migrant farmer who became an astronaut. I mean, who goes from plucking vegetables to exploring outer space? It’s like the ultimate career switch! This movie showcases the jaw-dropping determination and unwavering spirit of Jose and his family in the pursuit of his hefty dreams.
Meeting Jose Hernandez was an incredible experience. He is an inspiring individual who has achieved great things in his life. From a migrant farmer to an astronaut is truly remarkable. I was impressed by his humble nature and his willingness to share his knowledge and experiences with others. It was an honor to meet him and I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from him.
Fun Fact: Before becoming an astronaut, Jose Hernández got rejected 11 times! That is the dedication and perseverance of accomplishing your goal.
“Make sure you enjoy the journey to your goal” – Jose Hernández
Ingredient 1- Find Your Goal
Jose Hernandez wants to become an astronaut.
I want to become an aerospace engineer.
Ingredient 2- Know How Far You Are
Jose Hernandez worked at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and he has a long way to go to achieve his astronomical goal…pun intended.
I am a high school junior figuring my way into college. I, too, have a long way to go.
Ingredient 3- Draw A Roadmap
Jose Hernandez’s wife, Adela, helped him figure out his roadmap. He took flight lessons to become a pilot, scuba diving, ran marathons, got his masters degree in Electrical Engineering, and worked at a laboratory.
I have my road map in mind but it’s a secret 😉
Ingredient 4 – If You Don’t Know How, Learn
After getting accepted into the astronaut training program, José Hernández still had a long way to go. For instance, to make his wife happy and be successful, he bought her a restaurant, in which she turned into a traditional Mexican restaurant. This is the perfect example of him drawing the roadmap along the way.
I have not arrived at this step yet.
Ingredient 5 – When You Think You’ve Made It, You Probably Have to Work Harder
In 2008, he was asked to become a mission specialist and had to work harder, such as doing simulations that attach the space shuttle to the ISS.
I have not arrived at this step yet.
Here are some photos 😀
